Tanna Coffee Development Company Ltd

Growing coffee and communities

It would be hard to imagine a more awe-inspiring work environment, than Vanuatu’s Tanna Island. This tropical paradise, with thick rainforest and secluded beaches is presided over by an active volcano, and also houses one of the world’s most extraordinary coffee companies - Tanna Coffee.

The 100% organic coffee is often touted as among the purest in the world. Around 500 local farmers throughout the island cultivate the crops, growing more than 350,000 coffee trees on over 400 hectares of land. It is the brew of choice in most of Vanuatu’s cafes and restaurants and is served on the national airline, Air Vanuatu. It’s also exported to neighbouring Pacific Island nations as well as to New Zealand, Australia, the US, Taiwan and Japan.

Tanna Coffee was conceived by the British Government in 1984 to assist the newly-independent Pacific Island nation in developing its economy through agriculture. The venture thrived until the mid-1990s when severe climatic conditions and the plague-like coffee leaf rust disease almost led to its demise.

Fortunately, expatriate Australian coffee connoisseurs Terry Adlinton and Marilys Halasz were able to help. Terry, one of Australia’s first coffee farmers began a new Tanna Coffee development programme in 1998. The couple bought the company two years later, nurturing and developing disease-resistant stock they slowly built a flourishing social enterprise.

“We’ve been judged in numerous international competitions and always rated in the top 10 of the 200-plus entries and have received three bronze medals so far,” Terry says.

According to Terry the coffee has a pleasant, nutty aroma and a crisp, clean start that attains some good depth, with slight chocolate undertones and finishes with a lengthy, non-bitter aftertaste. He attributes the coffee’s standout appeal to the unique climate and its organic production.

“The rich, tropical soils provide ideal growing conditions. Farmers adhere to natural traditional methods, and don’t use any chemical fertilisers or harmful pesticides,” Terry says.

As the company thrives, so do its farmers, who complete a comprehensive training programme implemented by Vanuatu’s Department of Agriculture.

“The system empowers farmers to be self-employed and self-sufficient. They’re able to increase their incomes and improve their lifestyles,” Terry says.

With Tanna Coffee already possessing an estimated 90 percent of the domestic coffee market, Terry is develop the company in other markets, and plans to start with Australia and New Zealand.
