Nonu Samoa Enterprises Ltd
The juice of life
Garry Vui, and wife Mosiula are living their dream – raising their children and running their internationally successful business, Nonu Samoa.
Founded in 1997, the Apia-based business exports certified organic nonu juice and sun-dried nonu chips around the world. For over 2,000 years throught Polynesia nonu has been used as a natural remedy for digestive and respiratory disorders, skin irritations, arthritis and fatigue.
According to Garry, Samoan-grown nonu are particularly high in vitamins, minerals and natural sugars.
“Most nonu fruit have 138-143 different vitamins and minerals, whereas Samoan nonu have 150-154. They also have a lower water content which means the juice is less diluted,” he says.
Garry travels the length and breadth of the island of Upuola, where nonu grows prolifically in the wild, collecting the best fruit. At the certified-organic factory, Garry and his team of 14 assesses the fruit for quality, and place it in airtight drums and tanks for maturation – a process which takes up to 90 days. The juice is then extracted and pasteurised and the fruit is sundried for chips. Leftovers are used as garden fertiliser, nothing is wasted.
In 1997 Garry and Mosiula moved to Samoa to run Mosiula’s parents’ fish export company. Attracted by nonu’s growing popularity as in the USA, the couple began producing sun-dried chips for export.
“By mid-1997 we were sending out two 20-foot containers a month. Demand was increasing, but we had to return to New Zealand for family reasons,” he says.
Mosiula’s family took control of the thriving company, expanding into nonu juice in 2003. In 2004, Garry and Mosiula returned to Samoa to help out.
By 2005, the company was exporting about 100,000 litres of juice and a 20-foot container of chips a month.
They have discovered there are potentially large markets for nonu in the Asia-Pacific region and are working toward gaining ISO certification to expand into Europe.
Garry plans to establish a bottling factory, further contributing to Samoa’s economic development.
Garry feels privileged to lead what he describes as a dream lifestyle.
“My awesome wife and I are blessed with five wonderful and talented children. We live in a beautiful home in Vaoloa [in Apia] with amazing views of the city and ocean. I play golf in my spare time and coach my 15-year-old son, who is the country’s top junior golfer. Plus, the weather is fantastic. What could be better?” Garry says.
